Suffering With Sports Injuries?

Based In Ashgrove & North Lakes

Sports Injury Osteopath

Your body can feel the repercussions of sports no matter the level you play at. Whether you’re a professional athlete or you play socially, you are already more prone to develop a sports injury simply by partaking. At Still Point Osteopathy, the most common injuries we treat include tennis elbow, ankle sprains, strains, fractures, herniated discs, knee injuries, Achilles tendonitis, dislocations, and tarsal tunnel syndrome.

These injuries occur from various sports such as golf, football, basketball, and tennis, and are often caused by overuse and overtraining, where the player is pushing their body to the limit. However, sports injuries can also occur due to poor training practices, lack of stretching, and warming up and undertraining.

Osteopathic Treatment for Sports Injuries

Many individuals who injure themselves in a social or non-professional sport may assume they’ve just got a bruise or small tear, however, it’s important to receive an early and accurate diagnosis or prognosis for any injury. Our osteopaths at Still Point Osteopathy are a great first point of contact for assessment and will be able to prevent, restore, rehabilitate and optimise the body’s performance to ensure you’re able to return to your sport as soon as possible following an injury.

With our deep understanding of the anatomy and mechanics of the body, we will use this knowledge to treat, manage and rehabilitate your sports injuries, including engaging other providers where required. For those who take their sport a little more seriously, sports injury management starts before the injury occurs.

While any form of osteopathy, massage, and acupuncture are effective treatments for all the sprain, strains, and tears that may occur while training or competing, our expert team will be able to ‘fine tune’ your body before, during and after sport for optimum performance and reduction of potential injuries.

Additionally, this preventative care and maintenance can help identify areas that are not working their best which may lead to imbalances of the joints and muscles. Discovering this disharmony and discussing some long-term solutions with you can help prevent chronic problems and pain in the future.

Benefits of Osteopathic Treatment

An osteopath can help with many acute sports injuries and help relieve several symptoms. Additional benefits of seeking osteopathic treatment for sports injuries includes:

  • Minimising loss of function in injured areas
  • Increased blood flow to the point of injury
  • Decreased swelling of the injured area
  • Faster return to full function
  • Earlier detection or prevention of injury recurrence
  • Shorter recovery time after an injury
  • Enhanced return of function
  • Restoration of normal movement patterns, and coordination
  • Reduced use of pain medication
  • Reduced stress and anxiety

All of these benefits can be achieved through osteopathic treatment techniques such as joint mobilisation and manipulation, soft tissue massages, and exercise prescription and stretching. While many think that stretching is only important before physical activity, it can also aid in recovery. Our muscles can become tight during periods of inactivity following an injury so stretching can help loosen these tight muscles, thus, improving your range of motion (ROM).

These ROM exercises can help improve or maintain your joint range of motion and by doing these whenever possible during recovery, you can prevent the joints and muscles from becoming stiff. These exercises may also be combined with strengthening exercises once you have improved strength. Strengthening exercises can help you maintain the strength of your uninjured muscles and improve the strength of your weakened muscles.

Bookings Available

Book a consultation

To understand your pain and symptoms, you’ll be required to meet with one of our Brisbane osteopaths in North Lakes or Ashgrove for a consultation. This appointment will centre around your medical history and how you sustained your sports injury. There will be a physical examination around the muscles for areas of tension, tightness, and pain. We will assess the area where the problem lies but may also check what other body parts could have been affected.

After your initial consultation, your osteopath will formulate a tailored treatment plan. As each individual presents with different injuries, and has different physical capabilities and medical histories, we will always ensure that you receive an individualised plan for your sports injury management. This could mean that despite having the same injury as your friend, you may go through different treatment methods and exercises and that your rehabilitation period may differ.

Returning to sport at a full-time capacity post-injury can take time, hard work, and dedication, but our team at Still Point Osteopathy will be with you every step of the way. For more information or to book your first consult for sports injury treatment, give us a call today on (07) 3366 6831.

I have been seeing Phil in regards to a chronic neck pain issues as well as various other muscular issues. Whenever I see him for a treatment he takes the time to understand how I am experiencing the issue in my body and works with me to create a treatment plan. It’s a refreshing change to feel heard and seen as an individual. I have found him to be professional, kind and knowledgeable. I recommend Phil highly and continue to go there myself. I have also been to the Ashgrove clinic and recommend it as well.
