Pregnancy Osteopathy
It’s widely assumed that many of the aches and pains that are associated with pregnancy are all “part of the package” and many women even wait until after they’ve given birth to seek help.
Still Point Osteopathy provides osteopathic care during pregnancy (pre – postnatal) that focuses on allowing the mother’s body to cope with the ever-increasing demands placed on it during this period. This focus is aimed at helping to alleviate some of the issues associated with change in posture, hormonal changes as well as the increased loads placed on tissues and ligaments.
Helping to maintain appropriate joint and tissue function may go a long way to helping reduce stress on pre-existing conditions as well as reduce mechanical stress on the uterus and associated structures.
The role our osteopaths take is not designed to overrule or replace midwives, nurses, or other medical practitioners. It is simply to work in unison to help provide a well-rounded treatment and experience that aims to make your pregnancy as comfortable and painless as possible.

Osteopathy during pregnancy
Pregnancy is a unique experience – every woman has different physical, chemical and emotional changes that take place over a short period of time. Your body is adapting to carrying an average of 12.5kg of baby, placenta and waters which can cause a lot of physical strain on several organs, muscles and joints. As your body continues to adapt to accommodate the increasing size and weight of your baby, so too does your posture.
If you already had an existing back problem, you may notice more discomfort. That’s why, at Still Point Osteopathy, we assess you from top to bottom and aim to predict where the problems are likely to grow so we can eliminate them before it happens.
During pregnancy, the ligaments throughout your body will soften due to the actions of hormones. This allows the bones in your pelvis to shift and separate during delivery, facilitating the passage of the baby’s head through the pelvis. However, this softening can affect the whole pregnancy and make you vulnerable to strains. Osteopathic treatment during pregnancy is designed to help your body make postural changes easier, making pregnancy much more comfortable.
Additionally, it’s normal to see an increased heart rate during pregnancy as that baby pushes up against your ‘thoracic diaphragm’, which can make you quite breathless. Similarly, pressure on the stomach and diaphragm often results in reflux (indigestion). We see this commonly in the clinic and use gentle hands-on techniques to assist.
When it comes to exercise during pregnancy, we do not recommend heavy exercise. Continuing mild or moderate exercise can be good for you, however, with an already increased heart rate, some women may experience physiological anaemia. Your body and heart have a lot of extra demands on them, so it is important to listen to your body and respond sensibly. Pilates and yoga are good if done correctly: make sure that your technique is good and get proper advice from an instructor if needed.
Preparing for labour and after the birth
Our team at Still Point Osteopathy can be with you every step of the way through your pregnancy journey. Starting pre-natal to ensure your body is in the right condition to comfortably carry a baby as well as during labour and after birth. We may be able to help the labour and delivery go a little smoother by helping your pelvis to move freely, allowing the birth to progress more easily. We can also help with optimal foetal position to help your baby to present in a position that allows for a mechanically easier birth for you and your baby.
Once the baby is born, all your muscle aches and joint pains will not magically disappear. Your body will have to readjust to your new routine of taking care of a baby, plus refind your centre of gravity and proper posture without the additional weight of the baby. Neck and back pain can be caused by many things including breast-feeding position, carrying awkwardly, lifting car capsules and prams and reaching over the cot.
Osteopathy may assist you with these aches and pains by assessing and treating any structural imbalances as well as offering you advice on exercises and pain prevention. Osteopathy may also help with coccyx pain.
